Adansonia digitata grows across the drier savanna and wooded grassland of sub-Saharan Africa, with related baobab species found in Madagascar and parts of Arabia and Australia. It's widely known as the “tree of life,” a name earned honestly: communities across its range have long relied on its fruit and leaves for food, its bark for fiber, and its hollow trunk for water storage and shelter.
The fruit itself does something unusual for a fruit powder: the pulp inside its hard, gourd-like shell dehydrates naturally on the branch over several months of sun, before it's ever harvested — no artificial drying involved. Once picked, the dried pulp is simply cracked out, separated from seed and shell, and milled into powder. It's notably high in vitamin C and dietary fiber, though the exact figures shift by harvest and batch, the way any real agricultural product does.
Its flavor is tangy and citrus-like — closer to a mild lemon or lime than anything sweet — with a character some describe as similar to lemon sherbet. It's most commonly stirred into smoothies and juices, folded into yoghurt or oatmeal, or baked into muffins and bars.
