About this material

Marine collagen is collagen protein recovered from parts of the fish that aren't used for fillets — mainly skin and scales, sometimes bone and fin — a way of using material that would otherwise be discarded. “Hydrolyzed” describes what happens next: the long, naturally fibrous collagen protein is broken down, usually through enzymatic hydrolysis, into much shorter peptide chains. Native collagen barely dissolves in liquid; hydrolyzed collagen does, which is the entire reason it can be stirred into a drink rather than eaten as gelatin.

Fish-derived collagen is predominantly Type I, the same primary type found in most bovine sources — despite what some marketing suggests, there isn't solid independent evidence that marine collagen is absorbed better than collagen from other sources, so we're not going to repeat that claim here. More broadly, the research on what collagen supplementation actually does in the body is still developing — recent reviews describe the evidence as mixed, often based on small trials — so we're describing what this is and how it's used, not what it will do for you. Odorless and essentially flavorless, it's designed to disappear into coffee, smoothies, water or food rather than announce itself.

On the label: Hydrolyzed, unflavored.
