Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean basin, growing wild along coastal hillsides in Spain, Italy, southern France and North Africa; Spain remains the leading commercial grower today. Steam distillation draws the oil out of the leaf: hot steam passes through the dried or fresh plant material, carrying its volatile compounds with it, which are then cooled and separated from the water. The result is dominated by 1,8-cineole, camphor and alpha-pinene, in proportions that shift with growing region and chemotype — part of why rosemary oil from different sources smells subtly different.
The plant has a long documented history: ceremonial and herbal use in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, and later as the base of “Hungary Water,” one of Europe's earliest herbal cosmetic tonics. It's traditionally been applied to the scalp and worked into shampoos, soaps and lotions for its fresh, camphoraceous scent — we describe that as traditional use, not a proven outcome; the popular claim that it performs comparably to a pharmaceutical hair treatment traces to a single small trial with documented irregularities, not settled science.
