Batana Oil

Elaeis oleifera grows wild in swamp and seasonally flooded forest from Honduras down through Nicaragua, Colombia and northern Brazil — a different, wild-growing relative of the oil palm grown commercially elsewhere. The oil takes its deep red-orange-brown color from a high natural concentration of alpha- and beta-carotene, alongside gamma-tocotrienol, a form of vitamin E; its nutty character reflects the traditional practice of toasting the kernel before pressing.

Hand-extraction of this oil has a long, specific history: in Honduras's La Moskitia region, the Miskito people boil the ripe fruit, pound the pulp, sun-dry and crack the nuts, then cook and press the kernels — the same basic sequence a cold press follows today, just mechanized. Composition-wise it's an oleic-acid-rich oil (roughly 55%), balanced with palmitic and linoleic acids, which is what gives it its texture on hair and skin. Used as a hair oil and scalp treatment, and — less commonly known — on skin and in body butters, wherever an emollient oil with a heavier, coating feel is wanted.
